Where: Dreese Labs 260
Description:
Presenter: Dr. TJ Ronningen, Senior Researcher in Electrical & Computer Engineering
Abstract by the speaker: Preparing winning proposals is critical to researchers in academia and industry. Proposals are particularly challenging documents because they have to address multiple audiences, have to be information dense, are usually written under tight deadlines, and require collaboration with multiple contributors. I will provide an overview of a procedure to follow to prepare successful proposals. I will discuss preliminary steps that authors should take, including assessing whether to propose or not. I will discuss writing and editing a proposal, including the non-technical sections. I will offer advice on departmental and university resources to take advantage of while preparing proposals at Ohio State. Graduate school and postdoctoral positions are ideal times to get involved in proposal development, and I aim to prepare you to contribute effectively to proposals.

H-1B Visas: Politics behind the Policies
Where: Journalism Building 300
Time: 5:30-7:00 PM
Description: "Green Card Reform in 2012? It isn't as unlikely as it sounds. There is surprisingly strong support in the U.S. Congress for legislation making it much easier for international STEM students to become Americans after graduating. Forget about the H-1B! The reforms would let students get a green card within a year of graduating, and then become a full citizen five years later. The new law could radically change the engineering profession in America, creating new jobs and innovation across our economy."
In the past, we have sponsored events on how to navigate the cumbersome process of obtaining an H-1B visa, or earning citizenship. In this lecture, you'll hear from Russell T. Harrison, Senior Legislative Representative - Grassroots Affairs for IEEE USA. He will be explaining the politics of such obstacles, what is currently being done to make changes, and what you may be able to do to help.
This talk is being held from 5:30pm - 7:00pm in Journalism Building 300. Come listen to an important discussion and get some free pizza and refreshments.
